I disagree wholeheartedly with the discipline imposed. I’ve yet to hear the specifics of any allegation against me, nor have I seen any evidence that supports what the NFL alleges in its press release.

I look forward to the opportunity to confront what evidence they claim to have in the appropriate forum. Until then, I stand by my previous comments. I have never contributed money to any so-called “bounty” pool, and any statements to the contrary are false.

To say I’m disappointed with the League would be a huge understatement.

Any further questions can be directed to my union.

By Ryan Michael (Senior Writer) on January 31, 2012

Handout/Getty Images

As we approach the end of the 2011-12 NFL season, I decided to reach out to a respected league veteran to discuss his thoughts on the sport of professional football, the challenges next year’s rookie class will face, his experience competing against Peyton Manning as a member of the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV and what it has meant to accomplish even greater feats off of the football field.

Enter Scott Fujita: Ten-year NFL veteran, Super Bowl XLIV champion and current starting linebacker for the Cleveland Browns.

Mr. Fujita is a man whom I have long had a great respect for, not just because of what he has been able to accomplish as one of the better linebackers in professional football, but because of his contributions off of the field through various charitable organizations.

Scott and I spoke over the phone this past Friday and he was happy to share his thoughts on the various topics.

——————–

Ryan: What is it that first inspired you to pursue a career in football?

Scott: “My dad was a freshman-level high school football coach, so I was always around the game. I grew up as a ball-boy; for those of us in my neighborhood and around town who were athletic and liked to play sports, that’s just kind of what we did.

“I never really thought of football as a career, or even an option for a career. I liked to play sports, I enjoyed it. My priority was always about school. I was trying to cover all the bases with my education. I got the opportunity to walk on at Berkeley and it was great because that was the school that I wanted to go to. So to have a chance to go there and be part of the program, to compete for a scholarship and graduate with a degree from Berkeley, that was the priority.

“My junior year of college is when I was playing pretty well and was a starter; people started talking about some NFL buzz, the chance that I might get drafted once I graduated. So that was the first time that it really occurred to me that ‘holy cow, I can actually have the chance to play professional football.’ ”

Ryan: You were a 5th-round draft selection in 2002. What advice would you give to young players preparing to enter the NFL in 2012?

Scott: “Be prepared for the grind. For young guys who come in now, football is such a year-round game. It’s a tough spot for them because you come through and you play your whole senior season and then if you’re lucky enough to make a bowl game, you don’t get any break between the end of the season and the bowl game. Then, you’re getting ready for your senior all-star game and then the combine, all the interviews that come with that, and then the draft.

“You’re with a new professional football team and you have to absorb a whole new offense or defense, the whole off-season program, training camp and then a twenty-week season. So it’s kind of never ending, it’s grueling, it’s exhausting, so really to prepare their minds for that. You have to stay in great shape and also understand that when you have a window of time to get away and freshen up, to clear your head from the game, it’s important to do so.”

Ryan: You started at outside linebacker for the Saints during their 2009 championship season. What can you tell me about your experience playing against Peyton Manning in Super Bowl XLIV?

Scott: “It was just a blast; It felt like recess. People always ask ‘what was it like, was there tons of pressure, tons of stress?’ and I honestly didn’t feel any of that. I felt more pressure in the NFC Championship game in the Superdome to get us to the Super Bowl.

“When we actually got to the game itself, we were out there running around for warm-ups and all of the pain and bruising, everything that you’ve had all season long, suddenly just vanished. It felt like we had found the Fountain of Youth. We were out there running around, bouncing around like we were a bunch of kids in the ballpark. That was such a unique experience; it’s tough really to describe but it was a lot of fun.”

Ryan: What would you consider to be the defining moment of your NFL career?

Scott: “That’s a tough one. It’s tough because any part of my NFL career started for me when I was in college and when I got a call from our coach telling me that they were going to award me a scholarship. That was the first time I really felt like ‘hey, I can actually compete with some of these big-time athletes and I’m going to have a chance to play at the division-I college football level.’ That was good for my confidence.

“In the NFL, when I was drafted as a rookie in Kansas City, I had a linebacker in front of me named Lew Bush (Lewis Bush); he was a great mentor to me and we were really tight my rookie season. He had played, I think, eleven years at the time. He knew that I was his backup and that eventually I’d be competing to take his spot. After the first four games of the season went by, he was the starter and I got a call from my position coach for week-five to tell me that I’d be making my first career start down at the game in San Diego.

“At the game, before the ball was kicked off, Lew Bush pulled me aside and said, ‘You have earned the right to be here.’ That had stuck with me more than anything else my whole career. It was the first time that I really felt that I belonged here in this league when I heard it from a guy that was kind of a mentor to me, someone who had played in the league for so long.”

Ryan: You are known to be a very active member of various communities, spending a lot of your time during the off-season contributing to charitable organizations. What current plans are you excited about this off-season?

Scott: “There are a lot of things that I’m interested in. For us as NFL players, the window of time to really make an impact and to do things you’re passionate about, to really raise awareness for things that you’re passionate about is relatively small. The average career length is usually roughly three to four years and I’ve been fortunate enough to play ten, heading into my 11th season. It is a small window of time to be able to talk about things you’re passionate about and also to be able to talk about things where people actually care about what you have to say. That’s just the reality of it.

“A good friend of mine, Steve Gleason, who was a teammate of mine down in New Orleans, was diagnosed last January with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. I lost my uncle to ALS about 16 years ago. It’s incredibly aggressive. So to watch the way guys like my friend Steve and others with this disease just take it on with such courage and just face it, who can say ‘I’m not going to let this disease dictate how I live my life. I’m going to determine how I live my life with this disease.’ I think it’s that perspective to me is so moving and so inspirational.

“We’re developing a foundation called ‘Team Gleason,’ a 501(c)3 we developed to really get the word out about raising awareness for ALS, doing things to help impact and affect the lives of patients around the country. There are a lot of things on the horizon.

“It’s almost less about the disease and more about the story; it’s more about the message and that’s why I think that nationwide, people have been so drawn to the story and have received it so well. Peter King has taken a huge interest in it and has been doing so much to help support ‘Team Gleason.’ So, it’s a fun thing to be a part of and it’s great because Steve is the perfect person to be able to tell that story.”

——————–

After concluding the interview with Scott, I managed to gain an even greater respect for him, not just as an NFL athlete but as a person as well.

I would like to thank Mr. Fujita for taking the time to talk to me for this interview and I would like to wish him the absolute best of luck in 2012 and beyond.

Few football fans and certainly no Saints fans will ever forget the 2006 Saints and what they did for the City of New Orleans.

Steve Gleason (center) is a local hero who captured hearts again in 2011 by going public with his personal struggle. (Photo: Parker Waters)

If by some chance you have forgotten or don’t know the story, well….I’d like to recommend a great little book titled PATRON SAINTS. I like it, but then again, I wrote it. More on that in a moment.

When Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis and newly hired Head Coach Sean Payton set out to rebuild the team, they placed a great deal of emphasis on character. Yes, they wanted talented players, but they were maybe willing to pass on some very talented players who, perhaps, were a little lacking in character.

Of course, no true Who Dat needs to be reminded of what Drew Brees has done for New Orleans, both on and off the field. Sean Payton has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help rebuild the region after Hurricane Katrina and most recently, to aid those effected by the horrific BP Oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Free agent linebacker Scott Fujita also made an immediate impact both on and off the field. In addition to supporting numerous charities, including my personal pet charity, The Children’s Bureau of New Orleans, the California native joined the fight against erosion of the Louisiana coastline. On behalf of then Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu, I had the honor of handing Scott a key to the state for his efforts. Sadly, it was given to Fujita as he left his adopted state en route to a more lucrative contract in Cleveland.

Fortunately for New Orleanians, Scott Fujita has kept his ties to the city and his home in the Warehouse District. Friends like me and dozens more are blessed to have him around. Lately, one friend of Scott’s has benefited even more so in his own time of need.

Most Saints fans know the current heroic battle being fought by Steve Gleason against the cruelty of MLS, aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Steve Gleason gave us the perhaps most memorable moment in Saints when he magically blocked that punt against the Falcons on the night we all returned to the Superdome. He not only lifted our spirits, he raised the roof on what we believed could happen for our team, for ourselves, and for what we could become and accomplish together. Many tears were shed on that evening.

With our city on the mend, both team and fans have rallied this year around Steve Gleason and bolstered his spirits and his belief that anything is possible.

On a beautiful California day, just a few weekends ago, I was walking the sidelines of San Francisco’s Candlestick Park prior to the Divisional Playoff game between our Saints and the NFC Western Division Champion 49ers.

I saw Steve Gleason sitting behind the team bench soaking in the sunshine and as I moved over to say hello, I saw the towering Scott Fujita standing at his side. Always smiling, Fujita was there as he has been, privately and quietly supporting his close friend.

Scott Fujita has proven to be an even better friend than teammate.

There are many good reasons why the two men are such close friends and it has less to do with football and more to do with character, that same character that Loomis and Payton saw in both men. You’ll never hear Steve or Scott say anything negative. You won’t hear them cast doubts. To each man, the mountain ahead can be climbed and the ocean over the hill can be sailed.

A San Francisco radio station heard about Gleason’s battle and how this band Patron Saints had joined the fight. They asked Fujita to talk about it on a show and he agreed. More stations and even satellite radio channels have had Scott on. He doesn’t talk about his career or make Super Bowl predictions. He raises awareness of and raises money for Team Gleason and its hope of one day finding a cure for this horrible disease. The response has so far has been amazing.

Like anyone, I’ll never forget my memories of a game won down in Miami and of that shiny Lombardi Trophy being raised in honor of our New Orleans. But as time puts all memories in perspective, I remember more the men who made great things happen back when we need great things to happen. I hope I will remember too these amazing men who are making great things happen now.

I closed PATRON SAINTS with a quote from Scott that still brings tears to my eyes.

“I have had some time to think about this,” Fujita said. “I had never been in a place where the partnership between the team and the community was so real and genuine, like they really were in the whole thing together. It just made my experience so much more than just about football. As a player, you always hope that you are going to win a Super Bowl, and that would be great, but that’s a game. This was something entirely different.

“If I could wish one thing for every guy who ever plays football, it would be that just once in his career, just one time, he gets to experience something like this. I don’t think anybody, fan or player, will ever forget this. We didn’t bring home some big shiny trophy, but we got this moment, what we all came together and did for each other. We didn’t need a trophy. The City of New Orleans is our trophy,” Fujita concluded.

Given the choice of a shiny trophy or to be in the company of great men doing great work, I’d choose the latter. As each of us joins these men, we become part of a championship fight. Together we are champions. Champions are not made or crowned, champions are revealed. Once again, on the field and off, we are blessed to have our champions, our Patron Saints. Team Gleason and each member, player or fan, is a Champion in every way shape and form.

Central Coast NFL Player Tackles ALS

SALINAS, Calif. – For football fans in New Orleans, LA, Steve Gleason was never a household name until “the block heard ‘round the world.” It was Monday Night Football, and the first big game in the Superdome following Hurricane Katrina. Gleason burst through the line to block a punt in the game’s first series that resulted in a touchdown. It was a big play on special teams, but a bigger metaphor symbolizing the rebirth of an entire city.

That was in 2006. Today Gleason is a far cry from blocking punts to win games. Instead, the 34 year old is trying to win a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. Right by his side, though, is Carmel Valley Resident, and former Saints teammate Scott Fujita, who is raising awareness about ALS through Team Gleason. “It’s a horrific disease; I lost an uncle to it 15-16 years ago.”
Fujita now plays for the Cleveland Browns, and has traveled the country hoping to inspire others to join Team Gleason and to donate to the fight against ALS, a disease with no cure. “All of us, we want to be inspired, Steve inspires people, this story inspires people.”
The goal of Team Gleason is to not only raise awareness and funding for research, but to raise the spirits of ALS patients by giving them opportunities of a lifetime. This February, Team Gleason is sending one lucky patient to the Super Bowl in Indianapolis, IN. “A big part of the foundation’s mission is to help empower people to want to survive.”
ALS affects neurons in the brain, and is incredibly aggressive. The typical life span is just 2 to 5 years after diagnosis. “For patients like Steve, to face a disease like this with such courage, and to say listen I’m not going to let this disease dictate how I live my life…to me it’s just so inspirational.”

Fujita says Gleason has often visited him at his home in Carmel Valley, and the Central Coast even has a special place in his heart. “He’s connected to this region too, and I hope they show him the same support.”

If you’re interested in donating to Team Gleason, or to learn more about ALS, just visit www.team¬¬gleason.org

Fujita will ask NFLPA to push for independent neurologist at games

Posted by Mike Florio on December 11, 2011, 7:49 PM EST

In defending themselves against the manner in which quarterback Colt McCoy’s concussion-like concussion was handled, the Browns have pointed to, among other things, complimentary remarks from Browns linebacker Scott Fujita regarding the manner in which the team handled his own concussion. And that gives additional credibility to anything Fujita says regarding the topic of concussions.

Getty Images

On Sunday, Fujita — a member of the NFLPA Executive Committee — told Peter King of Sports Illustrated and Football Night In America that Fujita will press the NFLPA to request the presence of an independent neurologist at games.

Currently, the league requires any player diagnosed with a concussion during a game to be subsequently cleared by an independent neurologist before returning to practice or to a future game. But the league does not require an independent neurologist to attend NFL games. In fact, the NFL doesn’t even require a team-hired neurologist to be present at games.

“The one thing I know is that when it comes to this issue, players, coaches, and team medical personnel struggle in the heat of the moment,” Fujita said earlier in the day, in an email sent both to King and to PFT. “This has been an ongoing problem for years. The game-day sideline is intense, there’s a lot going on, and we can’t always count on everyone to make the most responsible
decisions.”

Fujita pointed to the mindset of football players. They want to play when injured, just as Fujita wanted to play — and did play — last month after breaking his hand. “The question becomes not about what’s best for your health, but about what your pain tolerance is and what you’re willing to play through,” Fujita said.

“So when it comes to head injuries, I think the only real solution I’ve heard that might help remedy this problem is to have an independent neurological consultant on the sideline,” Fujita added. “I think we may have missed an opportunity to properly address this as we were finalizing the CBA. Hopefully it’s not too late to get it right.”

Hopefully, Scott’s words will be heeded by the NFLPA, and then by the league.

Scott Fujita Plays in Americans for Marriage Equality Campaign

By Julie Bolcer

Super Bowl champion Scott Fujita makes the latest contribution to the Americans for Marriage Equality video series from the Human Rights Campaign.

In the 30-second spot released Wednesday, the Cleveland Browns linebacker says, “I’ve been married for 12 years and I know that it is unfair to keep other loving and committed couples from getting married and protecting their families.”

The ad, which will run online, is the seventh in the Americans for Marriage Equality series, a public engagement campaign launched in October that aims to raise awareness as the issue looms in state legislatures, voting booths, and courtrooms for 2012. Polls show that a majority of Americans support marriage equality, and the campaign aims to reach key constituencies with messages from Newark, N.J., mayor Cory Booker, Academy Award winner Mo’Nique, former NAACP chairman Julian Bond, actor John Leguizamo, and others who have already contributed videos.

The campaign is modeled on the widely praised New Yorkers for Marriage Equality video series, which featured public officials, celebrities, and athletes including Sean Avery of the New York Rangers and Michael Strahan of the New York Giants. Fujita is one of the few NFL players to speak in favor of marriage equality, a group that also includes Strahan and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendan Ayanbadejo, who contributed a video to the Marylanders for Marriage Equality campaign, a separate coalition effort, in October.

Read The Advocate’s interview with Fujita about his gay rights advocacy on the eve of his Super Bowl XLVI win with the New Orleans Saints in 2010.
